We have recently
discovered Mayan Ruins on the Resort property. Archaeological teams
have inspected the ruins at the "Johnson Mayan Ruin Reserve Site" and
found evidence of "Garbutt Red" pottery shards that are similar to
findings at the "Blackman Eddy Site" which is a Ruin less than one mile
from Iguana Creek Resort. It is theorized that these two sites, and
several other still covered mounds in the immediate area , are all
connected. Archaeological Teams have been working for the past several
years at the "Blackman Eddy Site" with Dr. James Garber and Kathyrn
Brown conducting formal "digs" in connection with the University of
Texas under grants from "FAMSI" (see "Blackman Eddy Site" pages and
related FAMSI Links).

There is also one of the largest three (3)
“lithic Manufacturing” sites in all of Belize located on the Resort
grounds. Lithic means “of stone” and is where the ancient mayans manufactured
arrow and spearheads and axes from flint and other stones. These sites have
piles of flint chard and pieces of flawed spear and other stones in piles over
30 feet deep and 15 feet high. The onsite hiking and horseback riding tours go
to and through these sites.
This section will be dedicated to an online chronology of events and
discoveries at the "Johnson Mayan Ruin Reserve Site", the adjoining
"Blackman Eddy Site" and any other discoveries in the area, as they
unfold. Check back often as we post new data about the "digs", gain
insights by the archaeological team and other relevant details! We are
excited to be a part of the rich history of the Mayan culture and this
beautiful country of Belize.
Look at some pictures of small excavation work being done.
