The
Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is home to a variety of
indigenous Belizean cats and other animals kept in natural surroundings.
In 1983, Sharon Matola was in charge of 17 Belizean animals during
the second shooting of a wildlife film called Path of the Raingods.
By the time thefilm was over, her animals were partly tame and might
not have survived in the wild, so Matola founded the zoo.
From outside the Barton Creek Cave,
you can see the enterence straight ahead. Barton Creek Cave is one of
Cayo's many breath taking natural wonders. Located off the Chiquibul
road this cave has become one Cayo's newest attractions. Access to the
cave is through a picturesque Mennonite farm community.
In some places you have to lay flat in your canoe to avoid the natural
formations of the cave (below). Skeletal remains, large formations, and
pottery can be seen as you travel close to a mile through the cave to
one of the stopping points. Barton Creek tours last anywhere between
2-4 hours.
A Rush like no other!!! The “Mother of all Caves” ... Actun Loch Tunich ...
It's now tried and tested and the results are Spectacular, Incredible ....
Stretch
your comfort zone as you rappel down into a jungle sink hole deep in
the rainforest. This expedition starts off with a vigorous hike into
the foothills of the Maya Mountains.
The edge of the Actun Loch Tunich sink hole is over 300 feet above the basin below and 200 feet above the rain-forest canopy that grows out from the sink hole basin.
Actun Loch Tunich sink hole is not actually black but since you can't see the bottom from the start, this definitely adds an additional element of excitement.
Fully
trained caving guides provide helmets and safety equipment as they rig
a system of rappelling ropes for your decent to the basin below. The
first 10 feet provides the adrenaline, the next 200 feet features an
unforgettable experience and sights to behold, and the final 100 feet
plunges you down through the rain forest canopy.
Feeling relief on reaching the bottom,
the question becomes - How do we
get out???
This expedition is not for the faint of heart and all participants must be relatively fit.
